Sorry That Saldana Didn’t Die, Attacker Testifies

The Scottish drifter convicted of savagely wounding actress Theresa Saldana in a knife attack eight years ago told jurors Wednesday he was sorry that she didn’t die.

“Unfortunately, I would’ve preferred a gun,” Arthur Jackson said. “In addition to being more efficient, it would’ve been more humane. . . . I regret very much the extent of her wounds.”

Jackson, 55, was convicted of attempted murder for knifing the actress outside her West Hollywood apartment in 1982. He said his 10-year mission to be executed at San Quentin suffered a setback when Saldana didn’t die from the attack, despite being stabbed repeatedly by Jackson with a 5 1/2-inch knife.

“My divine mission is to volunteer as a candidate for supreme sacrifice by way of death by shooting or cyanide gas at San Quentin,” Jackson said.

He now faces five felony counts of sending letters containing death threats to Saldana while he was in prison.
