A new pit road procedure was announced by NASCAR for 1991, aimed at making pit stops safer for drivers, crewmen and officials. The change was prompted by the death of a crewman in a Winston Cup race last month in Atlanta.

The plan calls for every car to be designated odd or even by virtue of its qualifying position, and only one group at a time may pit during a caution period. A caution flag will bring out two pace cars. One will control the pace on the track, the other will control the pace on pit road. Race cars will not be allowed to pass either pace car.

No cars will be allowed to change tires, for any reason, during the caution period.
