L.A. Black Hall of Fame Awards Set for Jan. 12

The first Los Angeles Black Sports Hall of Fame awards ceremony will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Ebony Showcase Theater.

Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues, heads a group of five sports figures from Southern California who will be inducted. Others are Roy Campanella, former Brooklyn Dodger catcher; Oscar Johnson, first black tennis player to win a national championship; Cheryl Miller, USC and Olympic basketball star; and Aaron Wade, a high school football coach who also became the first black official in professional football.

Being honored as student-athletes of the year are Lisa Leslie, former Morningside High basketball player, and Lamont Warren, a football star at Dorsey High.

The Dodgers’ Eddie Murray, who attended Locke High in Watts, will receive an award as sportsperson of the year.
