The Serious Stuff Is Somewhere Else

The laugh I get every Saturday morning from the letters to the sports department is a great way to start the weekend. There is no more amusing feature in The Times.

How droll, that so many sports fans take the business of athletics seriously. As if insulting UCLA after the Bruins lose a close one to USC makes USC any greater, or calling John Robinson names because he has fallen on hard times prove that the name-caller knows more about the game than Jolly John. No L.A. team in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1: It isn’t the end of the world.

The way some folks carry on, you’d think what happened in the athletic arena was important.
