Travis Davis scored on a 14-yard run with 1:28 left in the fourth quarter to give Banning a 21-20 victory over Dorsey in a City 4-A semifinal game at Gardena High Friday night.

Banning (9-3) will face Carson in next week’s championship game at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. The Colts routed Granada Hills, 57-13, in Friday’s other semifinal.

Davis went from goat to hero in the fourth quarter, when he fumbled to set up Dorsey’s go-ahead touchdown with 4:55 remaining.

After Dorsey’s last pass attempt fell incomplete with 15 seconds left, officials stopped the game when Dorsey fans ran onto the field to confront the officials. The scene nearly turned into a riot when Dorsey players and coaches approached the Banning sideline.

Dorsey was upset because it had a touchdown called back because of a penalty early in the game and because of a 15-yard penalty on Cedric White for spiking the ball after a run to the Banning one-yard line in the first half. On Banning’s winning drive, Dorsey was penalized 45 yards.

“We kept our composure,” Banning Coach Joe Dominguez said, “and I don’t think they kept theirs.”

“I’m extremely disappointed because I thought that we played well enough to win,” Dorsey Co-Coach Paul Knox said. “We had a couple close calls go against us.”

In the second half, Dorsey (9-3) took a 14-7 lead on a three-yard run by Yukion Frierson. However, Banning tied the score with an 18-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by a fourth-down run by quarterback Anthony Nicholson.

Dorsey, the defending City champion, appeared to have the game won when Keyshwan Johnson pulled in a 37-yard pass for a touchdown on fourth down following Davis’ fumble.
