William Manahan, an Orange County educator, has been named superintendent of the El Segundo Unified School District, effective Dec. 17, district officials said.

Manahan, 49, who rose from first-grade teacher to director of business services during his 17 years in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, will replace Richard Bertain, who resigned in June to accept an appointment by President Bush to a federal anti-poverty post. Manahan beat out more than 50 applicants in the three-month search.

Manahan’s three-year contract of $86,900 a year is expected to be approved Tuesday by the school board, district officials said.
