Arizona RV Park Caters to Seniors

Rincon Country RV Resorts, just southwest of Tucson, Ariz., is among a handful of facilities in the United States that are designed and operated especially for mature travelers 55 and over.

Certainly it’s among the largest. There are 960 full hook-up sites just a 10- to 15-minute drive from downtown Tucson. In addition, there is an exceptional array of recreational activities just for seniors, most of whom come for the winter season.

Long-term daily rates are as low as $8 a day--less than what it would cost to heat many homes in Frost Belt states.

But for Californians staying only for the three-month winter season, the rate is about $11 a day, plus electricity or other special hook-ups such as a telephone or cable TV.

The RV resort has all the traditional activities such as swimming, tennis and a spa and exercise room. But O’Leary has added a woodshop, photo darkroom, sewing, ceramics, lapidary, silversmith, ham radio and billiard room.

In addition, social directors offer a wide program, including ballroom dancing, desert hikes, bingo, sports tournaments, a variety of arts and crafts classes and seminars. There’s also a weekly fitness clinic, with free health checks for senior guests.

Roughly half the sites, which can accommodate RVs ranging in size from trailer to motor home, are taken by long-term reservations of six months or more. At least 450 sites are available for stays of two to four months. Shorter stays are possible but at higher rates.

Mature travelers heading for the nation’s capital might want to get the 1991 Gold Mine Directory, a free list of some 1,700 Washington, D.C., businesses that provide discounts for people age 60 and over.

The 100-page directory, a good portion of which is primarily for local residents, lists more than 70 area hotels and inns offering discounts ranging from 10% to 50%. More than 100 restaurants and 50 fast-food chains and snack shops offering senior discounts are also listed.

Though the directory sets the age at 60, individual listings can vary from age 55 for discounts at Ford’s Theatre to age 65 for a 50% discount at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In addition to entertainment discounts, there are other discounts for sightseeing tours and services, plus many more for shopping, antique shops and art galleries and bookshops.
