A man was killed and three people were seriously injured when a car traveling more than 100 m.p.h. smashed into another car sending flaming debris into a nearby gasoline station, police said.

A police patrol unit observed a late-model Mustang traveling west on 3rd Street at the intersection of Vermont Avenue at 11 p.m. Sunday “in excess of 100 m.p.h.,” said Lt. John Dunkin. “Before they could even make a U-turn, the Mustang crashed into a Honda,” he said.

The Honda broke into several pieces, with the rear piece catching fire as it hurtled across the street, igniting a utility building at a corner gas station.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, Dunkin said. The three occupants of the Mustang are in serious condition at area hospitals.

Police plan to seek murder charges against the driver of the Mustang, Dunkin said.
