Gordon Wins Race, Shuman CRA Title
Jeff Gordon showed his prowess on pavement, and Ron Shuman won the California Racing Assn. sprint car championship as its season ended Sunday on the half-mile, high-banked Mesa Marin Raceway asphalt oval.
Gordon, from Pittsboro, Ind., who won two CRA races at Mesa Marin in 1990, ran away from the field in the 30-lap feature Sunday, winning easily.
Shuman, from Tempe, Ariz., won his third driver’s championship by finishing fifth in the race. That gave him 4,601 points for the 53-race season, 16 ahead of runner-up Rip Williams, who finished third Sunday.
Williams’ car owner, CRA president Frank Lewis, won the owner’s championship, his second. Lewis had 4,585 points, 25 more than the Morales car, driven by Shuman.
