Pete Chilcutt’s dunk with 62 seconds left capped a second-half rally that led ninth-ranked North Carolina to an 84-81 victory Monday night over previously unbeaten and No. 18 Kentucky.

Each team went into the game with 1,483 victories, tied for the most in college basketball history.

Rick Fox’s three-point shot with 1:24 remaining got North Carolina (5-1) to within 81-80, and Fox passed to Chilcutt for the clinching basket 22 seconds later.

King Rice made two free throws with one second left.

Chilcutt, Fox and Rice scored 14 points apiece for North Carolina.

John Pelphrey, who had 24 points, scored five points and Richie Farmer hit three three-point shots as Kentucky (4-1) closed the first half with a 14-5 surge for a 41-33 lead.

No. 13 Oklahoma 98, Coppin State 79--Brent Price scored 27 points and Kermit Holmes had 23 points and 12 rebounds as the Sooners pulled away to beat the Eagles at Norman, Okla.

It was the 50th consecutive victory at home for the Sooners (7-1), whose streak is second to Arizona’s 51 among active streaks.

Reggie Isaac had 27 points and Larry Stewart 24 for Coppin State.

No. 17 South Carolina 69, Charleston Southern 51--Jo Jo English scored 23 points and the Gamecocks finished off the Buccaneers with a closing 17-4 run at Columbia, S.C.

Charleston Southern (1-3) had a 28-27 lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but South Carolina (6-1) pulled ahead, 38-35, with 13:49 left and increased the margin to 49-37 with 8:58 remaining on an 11-2 run.

REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS EAST

Larry Spigner hit a desperation 38-footer at the buzzer to give Lafayette (2-4) a 71-68 victory over Drexel (1-5) at Easton, Pa.

MIDWEST

Demetrius Calip had 19 points, including five three-point shots, and Michigan (4-1) got a 90-68 victory over Boston University (3-3) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

SOUTH

Anthony Dade made 13 of 14 shots and scored 30 points as Louisiana Tech (6-1) defeated Sam Houston State, 95-72, at Huntsville, Tex. Milton Hamilton had 31 points for the Bearkats (1-7).

WEST

Gary Gray scored 20 points and UC Santa Barbara (1-1) closed the game with a 9-2 run to beat San Diego, 72-63, at Goleta. Pat Hulbert had 16 points for the Toreros (5-2). . . . Desi Wilson had 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead Fairleigh Dickinson (4-2) past U.S. International, 92-71, at San Diego. Kevin Bradshaw had 35 points for the Gulls (1-7). . . . David Van Dyke had 16 points and 10 rebounds, leading Texas El Paso (4-2) past Bradley, 79-61, at El Paso. Chris Stuckey had 28 points for the Braves (2-3).
