BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Estancia Defeats Foothill, Gains La Quinta Final

Matt Fuerbringer scored 27 points to lead Estancia High School to a 71-59 victory over Foothill in a championship semifinal of the La Quinta boys’ basketball tournament Friday at La Quinta.

Estancia, the top-ranked team in Orange County, improved to 7-0. The Eagles play Huntington Beach tonight at 8 p.m. in the championship game.

Estancia won the Laguna Beach Tournament last Saturday with a 69-68 victory over Lynwood.

Huntington Beach defeated Katella, 76-71, in overtime Wednesday in the other semifinal.

Sean Amos scored 21 for Foothill, which plays Katella for third place at 6:30 p.m.

In another La Quinta tournament game:

Torrance 67, Troy 52--Randy Abbott scored 28 points to lead Torrance in a consolation semifinal. Kris Radcliff scored 16 to lead Troy.

Torrance plays Cypress at 5 p.m. for the consolation championship and Troy plays La Quinta at 3:30 for seventh place.

In the El Dorado tournament:

Sunny Hills 58, Whittier Christian 50--Dominic Carnesi scored 20 points to lead Sunny Hills (2-2) in a consolation semifinal. Ruben Oronoz scored 18 for Whittier Christian (2-3).

In the Arroyo Grande tournament:

Santa Margarita 68, Atascadero 52--Dan Bathey scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half to lead Santa Margarita in a quarterfinal game. Trailing, 22-21, Santa Margarita outscored Atascadero, 12-2, with Mike Carpenter hitting a pair of three-pointers. Carpenter scored 10 points.

Anaheim 55, San Luis Obispo 47--Anaheim pulled away in the fourth quarter, when Ryan Rude scored eight of his 10 points and Greg Cole scored 10 of his 19, to win the semifinal game. Leading, 35-32, at the end of the third quarter, Anaheim outscored San Luis Obispo, 20-15, to win comfortably.

Laguna Hills 69, Arroyo Grande 65--Paul LaMott scored 27 points, Justin Ross 18 and Brian Matsen 12 to lead Laguna Hills in a quarterfinal game. Laguna Hills (3-1) trailed, 24-12, after one quarter but tied the game midway through the fourth quarter and had leads as large as six points before winning by four.

In a nonleague game:

Santa Ana 93, University 80--Chauncey Woolridge scored 38 points and had 22 rebounds to lead Santa Ana (2-2). Josh Whelihan scored 25 points to lead University (1-4).
