SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Oklahoma State, the nation’s top-ranked wrestling team, made short work of Cal State Fullerton Thursday night at Titan Gym, winning nine of 10 matches for a 36-3 victory.

Two years ago, when No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State beat the Titans, 37-5, David Jones had Fullerton’s only victory. But Thursday, Jones, who came into the week as the country’s third-ranked heavyweight, couldn’t repeat the feat.

Jones lost to seventh-ranked Kirk Mammen when Mammen scored a takedown with 11 seconds remaining to win, 8-7.

Fullerton’s only winner was Ramon Diaz, who beat Kyle Rackley at 177 pounds. Diaz won despite a sprained right knee.

“I was being very cautious because I didn’t want him to really start cranking on my knee,” Diaz said.

But Diaz became aggressive in the match’s final seconds, scoring on a reversal with five seconds left for a 5-3 victory.

Jones appeared in control of his match at the outset, scoring three takedowns in the first period for a 6-3 lead.

“I think he (Jones) thought he had it in the bag,” Fullerton Coach Dan Lewis said. “He let up the pressure a little and maybe he got worn down at the end.”

Oklahoma State’s Purler twins, Nick and Tony--ranked fourth at 118 and 126 pounds, respectively--scored decisive victories.
