Strong defense by Georgia slowed down the Miami Hurricanes’ run-and-gun attack Friday night.

Miami, off to its worst start in 51 years but still averaging 75 points and 67 shots a game, managed only 52 shots as the 11th-ranked Bulldogs won, 78-60, at Miami.

The Hurricanes (0-5) shot only 29% in the second half and 35% for the game.

Miami’s start is its worst since 1939-40. Georgia, coming off a Southeastern Conference loss in overtime at Vanderbilt Tuesday night, improved to 6-1.

Monmouth overcame a 10-point deficit to beat Alabama Birmingham, 62-60, in the first round of the Alabama Birmingham tournament at Birmingham, Ala. The Hawks (7-1) will meet Washington State, which defeated Florida A&M;, 90-74, in today’s final. The Blazers (4-3) face Florida A&M; (2-3) in the consolation game. Washington State (3-2) used a 19-8 run midway through the second half to take control.

Beau Reid scored 10 points in a five-minute span to lead a 24-6 run by Nebraska that blew open a close game as the Cornhuskers beat Tennessee Tech, 113-92, in the opening game of the Nebraska tournament at Lincoln, Neb.
