San Fernando Valley residents donated more than 7,000 paperback books for soldiers stationed in Saudi Arabia, during a two-day book drive sponsored by the Los Angeles Times.

The books, which were collected Friday and Saturday at The Times facility in Chatsworth, will be flown to the desert by MGM Grand Air as part of Operation Desert Cheer, a project organized by the San Diego chapter of the National Speakers Assn.

The goal of Operation Desert Cheer is to send about 15 tons of morale-boosting gifts to soldiers stationed in the Persian Gulf.
