The Philadelphia Phillies today signed free-agent right-handed pitcher Danny Cox to a minor-league contract.

Cox, 31, will be invited to spring training with the major-league club as a non-roster player.

Cox, who has undergone surgery on his right elbow twice since May, 1988, is 56-56 with a 3.40 ERA in his seven-plus major-league seasons, but has not pitched in the majors since Aug. 6, 1988. In his first four full seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals beginning in 1984, he won 50 games.
