LOCAL : Schoolmate Finds Girl, 11, Dead

An 11-year-old Compton girl was found dead in her bedroom this morning by a schoolmate who had come to pick her up for school, sheriff’s deputies said.
Investigators detained James Heard, 38, identified as the boyfriend of the girl’s mother and were questioning him about the death that occurred in an apartment in the 15500 block of White Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy George Ducoulombier said.
A young boy who lives in a residence next door to the apartment found the body of Katrina Brown lying on the bedroom floor about 7:30 a.m., when he walked into the house to accompany her to school.
Though deputies initially reported the girl was shot to death, investigators later said that an autopsy would be necessary to determine how she died.
