Montebello : School Board Applicant Asks for Special Election
A member of the Montebello Hispanic Coalition who had hoped to be appointed to fill a vacancy on the Montebello Unified School District Board of Education has petitioned the board for a special election.
Frank Serrano, one of 14 applicants for the board seat vacated by Art Chavez, challenged the board’s decision to appoint a new member rather than hold a special election. Coalition members have been gathering signatures to force the board to hold a special election.
The board appointed Monterey Park resident Barbara Chavira earlier this month. She will sit on the board for the remainder of Chavez’s term.
District officials have said that a special election would cost too much, and accused Serrano of being a “sore loser.”
