Top-ranked UNLV held Princeton to 15 points in the second half and routed the Tigers, 69-35, Wednesday night at Las Vegas.

The Rebels (4-0) finished well below their season average of 112 points, but they did hand patient Princeton its first defeat.

Princeton (7-1), led by Chris Marquardt’s 11 points, was scoreless over a stretch of 10 minutes in the second half. Marquardt scored six of the Tigers’ 15 second-half points on two three-point shots.

UNLV jumped to a 13-0 lead and the Tigers’ first points came on a goaltending call against Anderson Hunt 6 1/2 minutes into the game.

Princeton closed to 19-17 with 7:25 remaining in the half on a three-point basket by Matt Henshon, which followed three-pointers by Marquardt and Sean Jackson and two field goals by Kit Mueller.

UNLV regained control with seven consecutive points and increased its lead to 33-20 at halftime.

Hunt scored 19 points for UNLV, Stacey Augmon had 13, Larry Johnson scored 11 and Greg Anthony added 10.

No. 14 Pittsburgh 84, Duquesne 65--Bobby Martin had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Brian Shorter added 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Panthers past the crosstown-rival Dukes at Pittsburgh.

The Panthers (8-1) have won four consecutive games and have beaten Duquesne in 11 of the last 12 meetings.

Duquesne (1-3) went on a 17-5 run in the first half to take a 19-14 lead. But over the final 5:51 of the first half and through the opening 1:46 of the second half, Pitt scored 18 consecutive points to take a 13-point lead and the Dukes didn’t get close again.

James Hargrove scored 17 points for Duquesne.

No. 9 Duke 103, Harvard 61--Christian Laettner had 24 points and 14 rebounds as the Blue Devils trounced the Crimson at Boston.

Duke (7-2) beat the Crimson (2-6) for the ninth time in as many meetings.

Harvard played without injured leading scorer Ralph James. Ron Mitchell had 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Crimson.

Lynn Smith scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half as St. Francis (3-2) of New York scored a 75-66 victory over Brooklyn College (4-5) at New York.

MIDWEST

Andy Kaufmann hit seven three-pointers and scored 33 points as Illinois (8-3) beat Missouri, 84-81, at St. Louis. Doug Smith scored 30 points for the Tigers (3-4). . . . Bill Hill scored 14 points to lead Illinois Chicago (7-0) to a 75-65 victory over Chicago Loyola at Chicago. Hunter Atkins scored 24 for the Ramblers (2-4).

SOUTH

Cornelius Holden scored 19 points and Louisville (4-1) defeated Cleveland State, 95-80, at Louisville. The Rams (3-5) got 20 points from 7-footer Shawn Fergus. . . . Jim Nairus had 29 points and 14 rebounds to lead Holy Cross (4-3) to a 90-80 victory over Mount St. Mary’s (1-7) at Emmittsburg, Md. Chris Cavanaugh had 22 points for the Mountaineers (1-7).

Johnny Pittman had 22 points and five blocked shots as Oklahoma State (7-1) continued its fast start with a 91-58 victory over Jacksonville (4-4) at Stillwater, Okla. The Cowboys have their best start since 1982, when they were 12-1. . . . Shawn Bradley scored 21 points and Scott Moon added 19 to lead Brigham Young (5-4) past James Madison, 84-66, at Provo, Utah. Steve Hood scored 24 points for the Dukes (3-3). . . . Lynn Tryon scored 17 points as Colorado State (7-1) defeated Texas Tech, 60-56, at Lubbock, Tex. Stacy Bailey scored 19 points for the Red Raiders (3-5). . . . Josh Grant scored 17 points in a little more than a half as Utah (9-1) beat Morehead State, 77-49, at Salt Lake City. Rod Mitchell had 19 points for the Eagles (5-3).
