A strong earthquake early today shook Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Romania, killing one person, injuring at least 15 people and damaging buildings, authorities said.

The Salonika Seismological Institute said the temblor had a magnitude of 5.5 and was centered in the village of Goumenisa, about 35 miles northwest of the Aegean coastal city of Salonika. The spokesman, Vasillis Papazachos, said the temblor was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

Pat Jorgenson of the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., said the quake measured 6.1.
