An Anaheim man was reported in serious condition after being shot in the back when he tried to get away from a group of masked gunmen who broke into his home Thursday night, police said.

Alberto Pineda, 26, was shot when he tried to escape from the gunmen, who ordered Pineda and three other members of the household to lie on the floor during an apparent robbery attempt, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Chett Barry.

Pineda was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange immediately after the shooting, which occurred about 8:35 p.m. There were no other injuries, police said.

Barry said four or five men, armed with handguns, stormed through a sliding glass door at 1196 N. Cherry Way in Anaheim. The victims were sitting down to have dinner, Barry said.

When gunmen told the household members to lie down, Pineda made a break for the front door where he was shot in the back, Barry said. The gunmen fled after the shooting.
