HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Santa Clara Freezes Up in Arizona

The temperature outside the Page (Ariz.) High gymnasium was nine degrees Saturday night, and Santa Clara was just about as cold from the field as the Saints dropped a 52-41 decision to Bishop Gorman in the championship game of the Page tournament.

The point total was a season-low for Santa Clara (10-2), which converted less than 30% of its field-goal attempts.

The Saints scored just five points in the first period and trailed, 28-19, after three quarters. Chris Cole was the lone Saint to score in double figures with 15 points.

Cole and Santa Clara guard Art Barron were named to the all-tournament team.

Matt Stebbers scored 14 points for Bishop Gorman (7-1) and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

In other boys’ games:

Cleveland 95, Venice 73--Brandon Martin scored 25 points for Cleveland in the championship game of the Los Angeles Invitational tournament.

Kenny Collins was named the tournament’s most valuable player, scoring 18 points and handing off 14 assists. Kayheed Murray also scored 18 and Shawn Bankhead had eight rebounds for Cleveland (7-2).

Thousand Oaks 80, Eagle Rock 50--Thousand Oaks outscored Eagle Rock (5-4), 46-16, in the second and third quarters of the fifth-place game of the Bosco Tech tournament. The Lancers trailed by as many as seven in the first period but climbed to within 16-14 by the end of the quarter.

Chris Loll of Thousand Oaks (6-1) had a game-high 20 points and 15 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team. Loll has scored at least 20 points in every game this season.

Andrew Borg added 14 points for Thousand Oaks (6-1), Dusty Lysobey had nine rebounds and Brian Capella had four assists.

Garey 68, Royal 66--Greg Gray missed a three-point shot at the buzzer as Royal fell in the consolation final of the Bosco Tech tournament. Royal’s Ryan Fien hit the front end of a one and one to tie the score, 66-66, but missed the second free throw and Garey scored with six seconds to play.

David Tyner led Royal (9-3) with 26 points, and Jared Byrne added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Hart 96, Loyola 80--Marty Downen had 39 points and 15 rebounds to lead Hart in a nonleague game at Loyola. The Indians expanded a 25-23 first quarter lead to 86-57 at the end of three quarters.

Tony Valenzuela scored 15 and Ali Peek added 13 for Hart (5-5).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Highland Hall 50, Valley Alternative 33--Kristen Johansen scored 31 points and had nine rebounds in the nonleague win. Monica Palma added 16 rebounds for host Highland Hall.

Phillicia Cockrell scored a school-record 17 points and had 11 rebounds and six steals for Valley Alternative (0-8).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Royal 3, Mira Costa 0--Maggie Perez, Jody Davidson and Amanda Love each scored a goal in the second half of the South Torrance tournament match. Goalkeeper Carolyn Rahn had five saves for Royal (8-0-1).
