Jonathan Walker, 41, a chef who gained recognition for organizing tens of thousands of meals after last year’s Northern California earthquake. At his death, Walker was planning to serve 1,000 Christmas dinners for Project Open Hand, a program that provides meals to homebound people with AIDS. Walker became full-time chef for Project Open Hand just hours before the quake struck Oct. 17, 1989. “We fed 10,000 victims in one day and 50,000 the first week after the quake. He engineered it all,” said project founder Ruth Brinker. “I couldn’t think of another chef who could have done it.” In Napa, Calif., on Saturday of a heart attack.
