The Sidelines : U.S. Team Is Top Hopman Seed
The American team of David Wheaton and Zina Garrison was seeded No. 1 for the Hopman Cup team tennis championship, which begins Thursday.
Wheaton is a late replacement for Pete Sampras, who withdrew with blistered feet.
Defending champions Emilio and Arantxa Sanchez, the brother and sister team from Spain, was seeded second. The Swiss pair of Jakob Hlasek and Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere was seeded third ahead of the Soviet Union, Australia and Yugoslavia.
The top four teams in the 12-nation tournament have first-round byes.
