PRO FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : CHARGERS : Chiefs Might Have Reason to Be Angry

Share

Kansas City General Manager Carl Peterson has been upset with the Chargers because they have elected to start rookie quarterback John Friesz instead of incumbent Billy Joe Tolliver against the Raiders.

Wait until he hears what Coach Dan Henning had to say after watching Friesz at work in practice Thursday.

“If John Friesz plays the way he did today, we’ll be in trouble,” Henning said. “He had a rusty day out there.

“He’s thinking too much; he wasn’t reacting. We expected that one of these practices. He got better as the practice went on, but early on he wasn’t going with his initial thought process.”

If the Chiefs beat the Bears Saturday in Chicago they will win the AFC West Division title and earn a bye in the playoffs if the Chargers defeat the Raiders.

“The Chiefs are mad,” Friesz said. “I can see their argument, throwing an untested guy in when they have a lot at stake. But we’re not conceding the game to the Raiders. We’re trying some different things, but we want to win the game as much as ever.

“With everything Billy Joe has done, he’s more ready than I am. Because he’s got 19 games in, he’s probably the better guy. But for whatever reason, they’re going to try some different things.”

Friesz reported late Thursday to San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium and discovered the team’s meeting room doors were locked.

“The players made him knock and announce who he was: ‘John, who?’ ” Henning said. “The players had a good time with it . . . But he still gets fined.

“First time all year. He took a lot of ribbing from the players. We took the David Letterman approach. We let everybody in the room give an excuse. He had the last one. His was the alarm didn’t go off and that got the biggest laugh of all.”

The Chargers added tackle Leo Goeas (knee) to their injury report as questionable for Sunday’s game with the Raiders. Joel Patten, who is expected to start in his place, suffered a neck spasm at practice, and remains listed as questionable.

Henning said the team may take defensive back Derrick Kelson off the practice squad and add him to the roster. He will have to clear waivers to get on the roster.

Running back Ronnie Harmon, who does not appear on the team’s injury report, did not practice for the second day in a row because of a sore toe. Henning said tight end Rod Bernstine will start at running back, although he said Bernstine continues to show a limp from a hamstring injury.
