Wales All-Star Lineup Set; Bruins’ Bourque Leads Vote

Boston teammates Ray Bourque and Cam Neely, who led the fan balloting throughout the voting period, won starting spots today on the Wales Conference team for the 42nd NHL All-Star Game.

Bourque, a three-time winner of the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman, was the leading vote-getter with 315,362 and will be playing in his 10th All-Star game. His starting defensive partner will be Paul Coffey of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who received 216,169 votes.

Neely, the Bruins’ leading scorer, led all forwards with 224,754 votes and will be starting his third straight All-Star Game. Neely will be joined up front by Rick Tocchet, Philadelphia’s leading scorer, and center Joe Sakic of Quebec.

Patrick Roy of the Montreal Canadiens, averaging 2.87 goals against per game, led the Wales goaltenders with 186,577 votes.

The Campbell Conference starters will be announced Thursday.

Mike Milbury of Boston will coach the Wales team against the Campbell Conference, coached by Edmonton’s John Muckler, in the All-Star Game Jan. 19 at Chicago.
