HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Record by Henry Not Enough to Beat Hilltop

John Pike set a section record by sinking nine three-pointers for Patrick Henry, but Hilltop won the Santana Tournament game, 74-65, at Santana High School.

He eclipsed by one Rafid Kiti’s old standard for three-pointers in a game. Kiti, playing for Valhallla, made eight three-pointers against El Cajon Valley on Feb. 11, 1988.

Pike finished with 32 points and also had 10 rebounds as did teammate Marlon Franklin, who finished with 21 points. Chris White led Hilltop with 24 points. Teammate Courtenay Brown added 17 and Carlos Marques had 16.

Grossmont 75, Chula Vista 70--Jean Beauville scored 21 points and teammate Ryan Gregory added 20 to lead Grossmont. Both pulled down 10 rebounds. Also for Grossmont, Mike Kingsley scored 15 points and passed for eight assists. Jerome Green scored 20 for Chula Vista and teammate Ken McDuffy 17.

Pepsi/Valhalla tournament

Kearny 70, Granite Hills 67--Granite Hills had three players in double figures and two score over 20 points in a losing cause. Jason Bram put in 24 and teammate Mark Syverson had 20. Kearny’s Mike Oviedo and John Lam each had 17.

Valhalla 94, Mission Bay 62--Mark Dillon hit seven three-pointers, which ties him with three others for third highest in a game in the section. Dillon finished with 24 points. Rick Moe led Mission Bay with 16 points. He had four three-pointers--all in the first quarter.

Sweetwater 87, Mt. Miguel 55--Pat Woodson led Sweetwater (10-1) by scoring 18 points and hitting four three-pointers. Teammate Brandon Tennant added 16. Mt. Miguel’s Domingo Rivera led all scorers with 21 points

Avocado League

El Camino 70, Carlsbad 57--After taking a two-point lead into halftime, Carlsbad missed nine front ends of one-and-ones in the second half and El Camino’s Jeff Reeves hit three consecutive three-pointers to ice the game. Reeves finished with 15 points.

Escondido 68, Rancho Bernardo 45--Mike Frank scored 27 points for Escondido (3-5, 1-0) and teammate Damian Cephus added 12 more. Rancho Bernardo fell to 2-7, 0-1.

Palomar League

Torrey Pines 58, Fallbrook 49--Dan Reynaga was 10 for 10 from the free-throw line and Torrey Pines (11-3, 1-0) was 18 for 22. Reynaga finished with 22 points and teammate Bill Scheibe added 16.

Mt. Carmel 90, Vista 76--After leading by just three, 36-33, at halftime, Mt. Carmel (1-1, 1-0) pulled away by outscoring Vista, 30-16, in the third quarter. Mt. Carmel was led John Young with 24 points and nine rebounds.
