BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Whitlock Fouls Out, but Gipson Takes Over

Although Tes Whitlock fouled out, Loara High School defeated Fullerton, 95-92, in three overtimes in a nonleague game Wednesday at Loara.

Whitlock left about a minute into the first overtime after scoring 33 points, but then Charlie Gipson took over for the Saxons (7-8). He scored 30 points, including 13 of Loara’s 15 in overtime.

Loara slowed the pace without Whitlock and only 12 points were scored in the first two overtime periods. Gipson scored on a layup after a steal to give the Saxons a 93-92 lead with 22 seconds remaining in the third overtime and made a layup at the buzzer.

Whitlock made two free throws with six seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score, 80-80. Chris Hartshorn had 25 points for Fullerton (7-7).

In other nonleague games:

University 104, Trabuco Hills 91--Luis Venegas scored 30 points and Donnell Dowdy 19 for host University (6-7). Brent Poulos scored 21 for Trabuco Hills.

Mater Dei 93, St. Paul 55--J.J. Ballesteros scored 21 points and DeJuan Matthews 16 off the bench for host Mater Dei (11-3).

Sunny Hills 74, El Dorado 64--Terry Mann scored 24 points and Dominic Carnesi added 20 for visiting Sunny Hills.

Anaheim 81, John Glenn 63--Frank Madrid scored 23 points, including five three-pointers, and Say Iemsisanith scored 15 for host Anaheim (7-6).

Esperanza 48, El Modena 47--Esperanza (11-5) held a five-point lead with 20 seconds remaining when El Modena’s Mike Terry was fouled while making a three-point shot. He completed the four-point play, cutting Esperanza’s lead to 48-47. El Modena (9-6) then forced a turnover on the inbounds play and worked for a final shot, but Aaron Aguilera’s basket at the buzzer was disallowed by the officials.

Woodbridge 80, Mission Viejo 59--Matt Murphy scored eight of his 11 points to lead a 27-12 second-quarter run for Woodbridge (10-6).

Foothill 62, Newport Harbor 55--Newport Harbor led, 55-53, with 2:47 remaining but didn’t score thereafter. Sean Amos had 26 points for visiting Foothill (6-8).

Canyon 69, Corona 48--Abdi Barkhodar had 18 points, including 11 during the third quarter, for host Canyon (9-5).

Katella 59, Westminster 48--Kevin Carlson scored 20 points and Roger Aria 16 for host Katella (9-4).

Villa Park 79, Magnolia 68--Magnolia led, 35-34, at halftime, but Villa Park went on a 12-0 run to start the third quarter to seal the victory. Ryan McArthur and Matt Gibson each scored 21 points for Villa Park.

La Habra 65, Century 53--La Habra took a 23-10 first-quarter lead and held on the rest of the way. Dion Holly scored 23 for La Habra. Darvin Thompson scored 18 for host Century (7-5).

Orange 71, Costa Mesa 49--Carlos Duran had 24 points for visiting Orange (7-5).

Laguna Beach 75, San Clemente 69--Josh Borella had 38 points for the visiting Artists (7-6). San Clemente (9-6) trailed, 38-28, at the half but cut the deficit to five, 50-50, after three quarters. Bill Hagedorn had 19 points for San Clemente.
