BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Deal’s 27 Help Monroe Advance Past Jefferson

Monroe High registered its second-highest scoring output of the season in beating Jefferson, 105-92, Friday night in the consolation semifinals of the California Basketball Classic at Westchester High.

Monroe (8-5), under first-year Coach Wendell Greer Jr., has doubled its four-win total from last season and will play Dorsey at 6 tonight for the consolation championship.

Stanley Deal led Monroe with 27 points. Monroe’s True Tribne had 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Lodis Woodmore added 20 points for the Vikings, and teammate Elmer Singh scored 14.

In other boys’ games:

Harvard 62, St. Genevieve 54--Markus Puhvel scored seven of his team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter to lead Harvard in the San Fernando Valley League opener at St. Genevieve. Harvard (10-3) fell behind by eight points early in the first period and trailed, 41-40, at the end of three.

Patrick Rodriguez led St. Genevieve (7-4) with a game-high 23 points.

Santa Clara 54, Calabasas 36--Art Barron scored 18 points on six three-point shots, including three in the fourth period, as Santa Clara (12-2) pulled away in the Frontier League opener at Calabasas. Steve Amar (12 points) and Isiah Mustafa (11) also scored in double figures for Santa Clara.

Calabasas (5-8) trailed by four, at halftime, 21-17, but withered under Santa Clara’s 26-point fourth quarter.

Greg Waugh led Calabasas with eight points.

Canyon 67, Ridgecrest Burroughs 49--Jermaine Nixon scored 23 points and Lance Moore added 20 points and nine assists for visiting Canyon in a Golden League opener. Nixon and Moore also had seven rebounds each for Canyon (9-6).

Camp Kilpatrick 69, Faith Baptist 63--Faith Baptist converted just four of 11 free throws in the fourth period as Camp Kilpatrick overcame a six-point deficit in a nonleague game at Faith Baptist.

Marlon Randolph and Vanard Wallace led Camp Kilpatrick (8-5) with 18 points each. Alex Estrada and Peter Rasmussen of Faith Baptist (9-3) tied for scoring honors with 19.

Ventura 57, Buena 49--Randy Martinez scored 22 points to pace the host Cougars (6-5, 2-0) in a Channel League game.

Ventura led by four at halftime then outscored Buena, 13-8, in the third quarter for a 42-33 advantage. Josh Evarts scored 12 points for Buena (7-5, 1-1).

Channel Islands 78, Simi Valley 48--Marlowe Durmiendo led a balanced Channel Islands attack with 15 points in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Michael Crawford scored 14 points for Simi Valley (6-7, 1-1). Channel Islands is 10-2, 2-0.

Agoura 73, Westlake 53--Jonathan West scored 17 points and Eddie Corridori and Jeff Niemann each added 10 for Agoura in a Marmonte League game at Agoura. The Chargers (7-3, 1-1) were playing without leading scorer Sean Martin, who suffered a sprained ankle Wednesday against Camarillo.

Matt McDonnell led Westlake (3-8, 0-2) with 11 points.

Bell-Jeff 71, St. Francis 68--St. Francis missed a tying three-point shot at the buzzer in a San Fernando Valley League opener at Bell-Jeff.

Brian Lee, Ignacio Castro and Bryon Camacho combined to score 64 of Bell-Jeff’s 71 points. Lee scored 30, Castro had 21 and Camacho added 13. Bell-Jeff is 7-7.

Nordhoff 78, Queen Elizabeth 55--Tim Sebek scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to help the Rangers (9-4) defeat Queen Elizabeth of Calgary, Canada, in a nonleague game at Nordhoff. Kevin Cochran added 17 points for Nordhoff.

GIRLS

Narbonne 50, San Fernando 21--San Fernando trailed by a point after the first quarter before being blown out of the semifinal game of the San Fernando Valley tournament at Woodbury University in Burbank.

Jordan 56, Birmingham 33--Despite Tracy Harris’ game-high 18 points, Birmingham (3-6) lost a fifth-place semifinal game in the San Fernando Valley tournament.

WOMEN

Southern Maine 95, Cal Lutheran 53--Cal Lutheran made less than 33% of its field-goal attempts and surrendered 26 turnovers in a home nonconference game.

Leslie Stevens led Cal Lutheran (1-5) with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
