NHL ROUNDUP : Nicholls Gives Rangers a 3-2 Victory

Bernie Nicholls knocked in the rebound of Normand Rochefort’s shot at 3:12 of overtime to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues Saturday night at St. Louis.

Goaltender Mike Richter stopped 40 shots for the Rangers, who are 3-0-1 in 1991 and are unbeaten in their last six games.

Brett Hull scored his 40th and 41st goals for St. Louis.

Calgary 7, Detroit 0--Sergei Makarov scored three goals and added an assist as the Flames trounced the Red Wings at Calgary.

Goaltender Mike Vernon got the Flames’ first shutout of the season by making 32 saves.

Vancouver 6, Minnesota 5--Dan Quinn’s second goal of the game with 6:26 left broke a 4-4 tie and the Canucks snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the North Stars at Bloomington, Minn.

Trevor Linden scored two of Vancouver’s three power-play goals as the Canucks extended Minnesota’s winless streak to six games (0-4-2).

Washington 5, Boston 3--Dino Ciccarelli scored two goals and the Capitals ended goalie Andy Moog’s 10-game home unbeaten streak by turning back the Bruins at Boston.

The Capitals shelled Moog midway through the second period by scoring four times on 12 shots before Reggie Lemelin took over in goal.

Pittsburgh 5, New Jersey 2--Defenseman Paul Coffey scored his the 300th goal of his career and Bob Errey converted a penalty shot as the Penguins defeated the Devils at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins took a 4-2 lead on goals 10 seconds apart by Mark Recchi and Jaromir Jagr in the second period.

N.Y. Islanders 3, Philadelphia 2--Pat LaFontaine’s breakaway goal in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and the Islanders went on to beat the Flyers at Uniondale, N.Y.

Randy Wood gave the Islanders a 3-1 lead with a goal at 12:46.

Montreal 3, Quebec 0--Patrick Roy made 18 saves for his first shutout of the season and the Canadiens scored three goals in the final period to down the Nordiques at Montreal.

Hartford 4, Winnipeg 3--Rookie Bobby Holik scored twice, including the tiebreaker at 2:45 of the third period, and the Whalers defeated the Jets at Hartford, Conn.
