HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Fiala’s Rebound Basket Gives Royal 70-69 Win

Mark Fiala grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with 17 seconds left to give host Royal High a 70-69 overtime win over Newbury Park in a Marmonte League game Saturday.

Newbury Park’s Matt Cummings missed a short jump shot in heavy traffic at the buzzer, enabling Royal (10-4, 2-0) to remain in a first-place tie with Camarillo. Fiala, who finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, scored all five of Royal’s overtime points.

Newbury Park (4-6, 0-2) outscored Royal, 14-9, in the fourth quarter to tie the score, 65-65, at the end of regulation play. Chris Falzone scored 20 points, Tim Lane had 18, and Cummings added 11 for Newbury Park.

Jared Byrne had 24 points and 16 rebounds, David Tyner scored 15 points, and Greg Gray added 11 for Royal. Kevin Hambly grabbed 11 rebounds.

In other boys’ games:

L.A. Baptist 44, Pasadena Poly 29--L. A. Baptist limited Pasadena Poly to less than 10 points in three quarters, including four and five in the second and fourth periods. Glen Dodson and Alex Pistone scored 14 and 12 points and Dane Brown grabbed 12 rebounds for L. A. Baptist (5-7).

Montclair Prep 80, Crossroads 68--J. T. Billingslea scored a game-high 26 points, making nine of 10 free throws, and Chris Sanger added 21 points and 10 rebounds for host Montclair Prep (9-2) in a nonleague game.

Montclair Prep held Kahlil Allen, son of former UCLA standout Lucius Allen, to 10 points. Kris Johnson, the son of former UCLA star Marques Johnson, scored six points for Montclair Prep.

Village Christian 79, Paraclete 54--John Brown scored 34 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead host Village Christian (8-6) to a nonleague victory. David Orso added 16 points and Matt Henzie had 11 points and eight assists for Village Christian.

Campbell Hall 59, Providence 46--Austin McKellar scored 18 points and handed out five assists and freshman center Alex Lopez added 17 and 11 rebounds for Campbell Hall (13-0) in a nonleague victory at home.

Providence’s Barry Dabbaghian led all scorers with 26 points.

Laguna Beach 97, Moorpark 63--Robbie Salone scored 14 points to lead host Moorpark (2-8) in a nonleague game. Kim Kira (12 points), Ryan Huisenga (12) and Lupe Solano (10) each reached double figures for Moorpark.

GIRLS

Rio Mesa 88, Hueneme 45--Marion Jones set a single-game school record for scoring with 48 points, breaking the mark of 41 set by Missy O’Brien.

Jones also had 14 rebounds and 10 steals and teammate Amy Woodward scored 21 points for host Rio Mesa (8-3, 2-0) in the Channel League game.

Gina Sosa led Hueneme with 30 points.

Sylmar 39, San Fernando 23--Lillian Stanford scored a game-high 13 points and Shantye Morgan added 11 for Sylmar (6-5), which clinched third place in the San Fernando Valley tournament. Stanford and Vickey Steffen were named to the all-tournament team.

Thousand Oaks 82, Camarillo 47--Junior guard Michelle Palmisano scored 31 points, topping the 30-point plateau for the fifth time in 14 games, to lead the Lancers in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Sasha Scardino had 12 points for Thousand Oaks (13-1, 2-0).

Taft 54, Locke 47--Alissa Tishler, an all-tournament selection, scored 15 points and Julie Kawamoto added 13 for Taft (5-4) in the consolation championship of the San Fernando Valley tournament. Taft’s Sandra Perez scored 12 points.
