NHL ROUNDUP : Rangers Get Bounces to Defeat Flyers, 3-2

Share

The New York Rangers took advantage of a couple of lucky caroms at New York Monday night to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2.

Two goals by All-Star Rick Tocchet had given the Flyers a 2-1 lead with just eight minutes left.

The Rangers’ Brian Mullen fired a shot from long range. Just as goaltender Ron Hextall was about to make the save, the puck hit the skate of the Rangers’ Kelly Kisio, and found its way into the goal.

There was a repeat just 26 seconds later when Kris King’s long shot hit teammate David Shaw caromed away from Hextall and into the net.

Instead of cutting the Rangers’ lead in the Patrick Division to five points, the Flyers, winless in four games (0-3-1), fell behind by nine.

Tocchet, the only Flyer on the all-star team, knocked in rebounds twice and now has 27 goals.

Boston 5, Winnipeg 2--Reggie Lemelin, getting only his second start in goal in the last 15 games, sparkled in Boston.

For 43 minutes Lemelin stopped the Jets cold while the Bruins gave him a 3-0 lead.

When the Jets broke through for two goals early in the final period, Cam Neely scored his 25th goal to make victory certain.
