Locomotive Hits Car; 1 Dead, 1 Hurt
A woman was killed and a man critically injured late Friday when their car was rammed by a locomotive and then dragged 100 yards at a harbor area rail crossing, Long Beach fire officials said.
Both victims, whose names were not immediately available, appeared to be in their early 40s, officials said.
The driver apparently disregarded warning lights at the crossing on Anaheim Street near the Los Angeles-Long Beach border, said Bob Caldon, Long Beach fire department spokesman. “It appears they were hit by the Southern Pacific engine . . . and (the car) crumpled up into a ball,” Caldon said.
