NHL ROUNDUP : Rangers Continue to Have Problems With Red Wings

Share

The Detroit Red Wings, who have the best home record in the National Hockey League, are especially tough on the New York Rangers at Joe Louis Arena.

Soviet rookie Sergei Federov and Steve Yzerman each scored twice Friday night and the Red Wings rolled to a 6-3 victory over the leaders of the Patrick Division.

The Red Wings, third in the Norris Division, improved their home record to 18-6-0. In their last seven games at home against the Rangers, they are 5-0-2.

Federov, who has 21 goals, more than any other rookie, also had an assist to help the Red Wings build a 5-0 lead before Mike Gartner spoiled Tim Cheveldae’s shutout after 35 1/2 minutes.

Yzerman, who had 62 goals last season, has 30 this season.

After Yzerman’s 30th, at 12:25 of the second period, made it 5-0, Mike Richter replaced John Vanbiesbrouck in the nets for the Rangers.

Federov’s second goal, early in the final period, was short-handed.

Washington 4, Calgary 2--The Capitals played without their best defensive player, Rod Langway, but they stretched their unbeaten string to four games at Landover, Md.

Michal Pivonka scored two power-play goals, the last with just under four minutes remaining, to clinch the victory.

Langway has back spasms and will also miss tonight’s game at Montreal.

Chicago 3, Winnipeg 1--Steve Thomas scored midway through the third period at Winnipeg to break a 1-1 tie and enable the Blackhawks to become the first NHL team to win 30 games this season. Chicago’s 63 points are the most in the league.

The Blackhawks have won five of their last six and lead the Norris Division by nine points.
