Newbery, Caldecott Medals Presented

The American Library Assn. presented its John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott medals for excellence in children’s literature Monday at its midwinter meeting in Chicago.

Winner of the 1991 Newbery medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in 1990 is “Maniac Magee,” by Jerry Spinelli and published by Little Brown.

The 1991 Caldecott medal for the most distinguished American picture book went to “Black and White,” illustrated by David Macaulay and published by Houghton Mifflin.

Also named were one Newbery honor book, “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle” by Avi (Orchard) and two Caldecott honor books, “Puss in Boots,” illustrated by Fred Marcellino (Farrar Straus Giroux) and “More, More, More Said the Baby: Three Love Stories” illustrated by Vera B. Williams (Greenwillow).
