PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Edison, Marina Aren’t Satisfied With a 0-0 Tie

SPECIAL TO NUESTRO TIEMPO

Edison girls’ soccer Coach Elias Shehadi didn’t like his team’s performance and Marina Coach Andrea Willer said her team has seen better days.

Both responses came after Edison and Marina played to a 0-0 tie Tuesday afternoon at Edison High School.

“We should have won today,” Shehadi said of his fifth-ranked Division 4-A team, “but we didn’t control the ball on the ground and we played Marina’s game instead.”

Marina (12-1-2, 2-0-1 in league) disrupted Edison’s offensive scheme by constantly clearing the ball to midfield whenever the Chargers moved it inside the penalty area.

Marina’s defense has allowed only three goals all season with Cristin Rossman in goal. Tuesday, Edison (10-2-6, 2-0-1) took seven shots on goal and Rossman recorded 16 saves.

Rossman thwarted Edison’s best scoring chance with 10 minutes remaining by leaping to deflect Jennifer Lachman’s 15-yard shot, then catching the rebound before other Edison players got near the ball.

“She could be the best goalie in all of the CIF (Southern Section),” Shehadi said of the 5-foot-10 Rossman.

But it was Rossman’s counterpart, Edison goalie Stephanie Rogers, who preserved the tie with less than a minute to play by making a diving save on Amy Peterson’s shot from five yards.

“On offense, we normally get 20 to 30 shots but today we only had nine,” Willer said. “I’ve seen us play better.

“I’m not disappointed with the tie, but I do think that the league title will come down to these two teams.”
