COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Uses Hot Shooting, Height to Win

Eric Pauley had 29 points and Jim Waikle added a career-high 18 as Cypress College defeated Golden West, 90-81, in an Orange Empire Conference basketball game Wednesday at Golden West.

Pauley, a 6-foot-10 forward, continued his hot shooting, making nine of 12 shots from the field. He has hit on 39 of 47 attempts (77%) in his past four games.

Waikle, a 7-foot-1 center who had a seven-inch advantage over the tallest Golden West player, used it well. He made eight of 11 field-goal attempts and one of his misses was a botched dunk.

Waikle scored 16 points in the first half but picked up his third and fourth fouls early in the second, forcing him to the bench. He made two free throws with 1:20 left to give Cypress an 88-77 lead.

Sam Sabarra scored 12 points, all in the second half, as Cypress pulled away. Cypress (16-8, 3-1 in conference) led by only a point, 36-35, at halftime.

Brian Kenney scored 16 on seven-of-nine shooting for Cypress. Scott Campbell scored 21 for Golden West (10-13, 2-3).

In other Orange Empire Conference men’s games:

Rancho Santiago 91, Fullerton 61--Fullerton (12-10, 1-3) trailed, 13-11, with 13:08 left in first half, but Rancho Santiago went on a 19-2 run over the next six minutes and coasted to its 20th consecutive victory.

Corie Blount scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds, and Erik Martin had 17 points and seven rebounds for host Rancho Santiago (23-1, 5-0).

Orange Coast 71, Riverside 66--The score was tied at 58-58 with 4:30 left, but visiting OCC went on a 13-8 run. Agustin Heredia scored 16 for OCC (10-11, 1-3).

In Orange Empire women’s basketball:

Golden West 92, Cypress 72--Bits Sirchia had 25 points and Jennifer Harney 24 for the Rustlers (23-1, 5-1). Chris Bazzel had 17 points and 16 rebounds and Heidy Ress scored 15 points on five three-pointers for host Cypress (2-19, 1-3).

Fullerton 76, Rancho Santiago 51--Keri Erkenbrack scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Hornets (17-4, 3-1) at Fullerton. Marianne Karp had 19 points and 13 points for Rancho Santiago (7-14, 0-5).

Riverside 70, Orange Coast 53--Erika Manning scored 11 for Orange Coast (11-12, 1-3).
