The Chicago Blackhawks had to settle for a tie when third-period goals by Tommy Albelin and Kirk Muller gave the New Jersey Devils a 2-2 tie at East Rutherford, N.J., Wednesday night. But the Blackhawks are still one of the hottest teams in the NHL with a 6-1-1 record in their past eight games.

The Devils snapped a six-game losing streak but saw their winless streak extended to 10 games (0-6-4).

Trailing 2-0, the Devils came to life in the third period, cutting Chicago’s lead to 2-1 on Albelin’s first goal of the season on a power play at 3:08.

Muller then scored off a pretty feed from Peter Stastny at 8:38 to tie the score.

Muler’s goal, his 14th of the season, was his 500th career point, making him the first player in the Devils’ history to reach that milestone.

The Devils dominated the overtime period, outshooting the Blackhawks, 4-0.

Buffalo 5, Detroit 3--Alexander Mogilny scored his 16th and 17th goals of the season at Buffalo as the Sabres won their third consecutive game.

Paul Ysebaert, Dave Barr and Bob Probert scored for the Red Wings, who have lost two straight.

Ysebaert opened the scoring at 3:00 of the first period when he took a pass from Marc Habsheid and steered the puck past Buffalo goaltender Daren Puppa.

Then Mogilny tied it at 7:35 when he zipped around Detroit defenseman Yves Racine and beat goaltender Glen Hanlon with a waist-high shot.

Mogilny put the Sabres in front late in the period when he fired a 30-footer past Hanlon at 17:00 with Buffalo shorthanded.

Winnipeg 2, Vancouver 1--Phil Housley scored a shorthanded goal in the third period at Vancouver and the Winnipeg Jets killed off a five-minute penalty as the Jets moved within two points of the fourth-place Canucks in the Smythe Division.

Housley broke a 1-1 tie at 2:14 when he blasted a 55-foot shot past Canuck goaltender Kirk McLean after some sloppy play in the Vancouver zone.
