ORANGE COUNTY BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Irvine Women Fold in 2nd Half, FalltoLongBeach
The UC Irvine women’s basketball team, fresh off its first Big West Conference victory in nearly two years, ran into 25th-ranked Cal State Long Beach Thursday in the Bren Center.
Irvine (3-12, 1-5 in conference) stayed within striking distance for much of the first half. However, Long Beach opened the second half with a 29-7 run, turning an 11-point halftime lead into a 63-30 runaway.
“The first half was really good,” Irvine Coach Dean Andrea said. “Long Beach didn’t do anything different the second half. We just didn’t compete. We folded.”
Irvine had beaten San Jose State Monday to break a 25-game conference losing streak.
Dana Wilkerson, Trise Jackson, Serina Strange and Marshella Harriston each scored 12 points for Long Beach (7-5, 2-1).
Yvonne Catala scored 15 points for Irvine. Kathy Lizarraga added 12 points, but made only four of 16 shots.
