Alice in Designer-Land

THE MOVIE: “Alice.”

THE SCRIPT: Mia Farrow (pictured) stars in Woody Allen’s socially conscious comedy about a rich New York wife and mother swathed in all the “right” materialistic trappings.

THE LOOK: Costume designer Jeffrey Kurland hits every Upper East Side New York fashion cliche right on the button. Chanel, Armani and Valentino are worn as uniforms.

Alice’s friends wear the same labels and form a sort of club, dispensing information about everything from the right dog groomer, masseuse and professional trainer to the current mysterious Chinese herbalist craze. They are oblivious to their extreme self-involvement.

Chanel dominates with gold and pearl jewelry, red sweaters with signature black-banding and tweed suits. Roll brim hats complete several outfits. There are Armani herb-color wool jackets and a Valentino ensemble in red, black and white under an ankle-length mink coat that helps portray Alice’s Catholic, high-society look. Pearl necklaces and oversized, white silk pajamas hint at her gentle nature.

“We wanted to show reality, but heighten it,” Kurland says. “No matter what Mia (Alice) is wearing, her innocence comes through in her pearls, her schoolgirl hat, her white pajamas, while her friends remain harder-edged. Even when Mia wears a red Chanel sweater, it’s a little schlumpy.”

Alice wears so many red outfits as a symbol of all the passion she usually keeps hidden inside. Reflecting her confusion, Alice seesaws between her rich-wife look and simple, innocent clothes: lace collars, earthy sweaters and navy blue jeans. A velvet headband perpetually lodged behind her blond bangs looks more fifth-grade than high fashion. As Farrow’s character gets more in touch with her true humanistic feelings, she abandons vivid colors for soft yellows, browns and blues.

THE STORES: “Mia’s mink coat was custom-made at Ben Kahn, and the Beacon coat worn by her friend in the Ralph Lauren scene was made from antique blankets, and then Ben Kahn trimmed it with fur,” Kurland says. All the Upper East Side uniforms can be found in Armani, Chanel and Valentino boutiques from New York to Los Angeles.
