THE NFL PLAYOFFS : NOTES : Montana Misses 49ers’ Practice Because of Flu
Quarterback Joe Montana missed the San Francisco 49ers’ practice Friday because of flu, but he is expected to play in Sunday’s NFC Championship game against the New York Giants.
“We expect him to be fine,” Coach George Seifert said. “It was just a matter of having him not come to work when he doesn’t feel good.”
Montana was listed as probable on the 49ers’ injury report.
Col. John Myers, director of advertising for the U.S. Army recruiting command at Ft. Sheridan, Ill., confirmed the Army was withdrawing its TV advertising from the NFC and AFC playoff games. It did not buy Super Bowl time.
The Army had bought one 30-second commercial each on NBC’s telecast of the AFC championship game at Buffalo and CBS’s NFC championship at San Francisco, Myers said.
One source, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity, said the networks “anticipated this.”
In his six postseason games dating to the 1989 Super Bowl, Joe Montana has completed 110 of 140 passes, 78.6%. He has thrown 15 touchdown passes and one interception.
