Seeley Quits Marina Football Job After Winning Season

John Seeley, who turned around Marina High School’s struggling football program, has resigned after two seasons, according to the school’s athletic director, Larry Doyle.

Seeley led Marina to a 6-4 record last fall, the school’s best record since 1985. Marina lost 18 consecutive games between 1987 and 1989, but Seeley’s Marina teams compiled a 10-10 record the past two seasons.

“John was unhappy with a lot of things,” Doyle said. “He had been mulling over the decision for some time. He finally got discouraged with the lack of assistants and budget cuts.

“He went through some stressful times, but we’re all grateful for the job he did in turning around the program here.”

Seeley was an assistant for five years at Valencia before joining former Marina Coach Chris Ramsey as an assistant in 1987. He replaced Ramsey as the head coach in 1989.

Doyle said the school is not accepting applications at this time. Jack Bowman, a former head coach at Westminster, has expressed interest in the position. Bowman was an assistant under Seeley the past two seasons.
