It wouldn’t be a bad idea to schedule a root canal for Dec. 12, 1991, if you live in Cathedral City. According to its official 10th anniversary calendar, the day won’t exist in the desert community.

Officials spent about $15,000 to produce and print 12,000 copies of the 1991 calendars, only to find out they list just 364 days and place Christmas on the same day as in 1990.

The problem was found just before the calendars were to be mailed, putting the City Council in a bind.

“If it had been any other month, it would have been OK,” said City Manager Jere Kersnar. “But with Christmas and everything, the council was quite worried about people making Christmas vacation plans.”

The council decided not to mail the calendars and had to cancel plans to recycle them because the paper is not recyclable, Kersnar said. The council decided to hand them out at City Hall, along with a warning that December may fly by a little faster next year.

For some people, the calendar is perfect, said Councilwoman Sarah DiGrandi.

“One person approached me and said he wanted the calendar because his wife’s birthday was Dec. 12,” she said.
