‘Dances With Wolves’ Leads Globe Awards

The Western “Dances With Wolves” triumphed at the 1991 Golden Globe awards Saturday night, winning three top awards.

Kevin Costner’s first directorial effort was named best dramatic motion picture and took the award for directing. Screenwriter Michael Blake won for best screenplay.

The festivities were overshadowed by talk of the Persian Gulf, both in the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and backstage. The awards were held amid tight security.

The romance-for-convenience comedy “Green Card” was chosen best comic or musical motion picture, and its star, Gerard Depardieu, was honored as best actor in that category.

Julia Roberts, the prostitute with a shot at happiness in “Pretty Woman,” won the award for best actress in a musical or comic motion picture.

Kathy Bates, who plays the obsessed fan of a romance writer in “Misery,” was chosen best dramatic actress. Jeremy Irons, starring in “Reversal of Fortune” as Klaus von Bulow, was named best dramatic actor.

The best foreign language film Globe went to France’s “Cyrano de Bergerac,” which stars Depardieu in the title role.

“The Godfather Part III” led nominations in the movie categories but came away empty-handed.

The Golden Globes are selected by 84 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., and often serve as an indicator of Oscar nominations.

Rocker Jon Bon Jovi collected a Globe for best original song for “Blaze of Glory” from “Young Guns II.”

Best original score went to “The Sheltering Sky.”

In the television competition, the quirky drama “Twin Peaks” won three prizes, including best dramatic series; best dramatic actor, Kyle MacLachlan, and best supporting actress, Piper Laurie.

The barroom comedy “Cheers” won three Globes also, including best comedy series. Two of its stars, Kirstie Alley and Ted Danson, won the comic TV acting awards.
