CSUN Signs Kicker From Orange Coast

The Cal State Northridge football team has filled one of its most pressing needs, signing kicker Mike Wade of Orange Coast College to a scholarship agreement.

Wade, who made 11 of 20 field-goal attempts for Orange Coast last season, steps into a void created by the departure of Abo Velasco, CSUN’s career leader in field goals and kick scoring. Velasco completed his eligibility last season.

Northridge also has a scholarship commitment from Jason Silverstein, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound offensive tackle, Coach Bob Burt said Saturday.

Silverstein is a former Cleveland High standout who last played in 1989, when he was attending Valley College.

Wade enrolled at Orange Coast after spending three years in the Army. Previous to his military duty, he played one season at Alan Hancock College.

Last fall, Wade set the Orange Coast school record for field goals in a season. His longest was a 51-yard effort with 47 seconds to play that gave the Pirates a 12-10 victory over Riverside City College.

The addition of Silverstein and Wade brings to four the number of CSUN football recruits.

The Heartbreakers Open racquetball tournament will be held at Racquetball World in Canoga Park on Feb. 8-10.

Competition will be staged for men and women in 18 divisions and there will be cash prizes in five classifications, including $500 for the men’s open winner. First- and second-place trophies will be awarded in all other divisions.

The open class is expected to draw professionals Andy Gross and Ed Andrews. Gross defeated Andrews in two games in the final of a tournament at Racquetball World in October.
