COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Quick Lead Fuels Master’s Victory Over Longtime Nemesis

The Master’s College snapped an eight-game losing streak to Christian Heritage that began in 1987, posting a 67-46 victory Saturday night in an NAIA District 3 game at Christian Heritage.

Christian Heritage’s point total was a school record for least points scored in a game.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 14-0 first-half lead and never trailed. Christian Heritage (4-14, 1-4 in district play) missed five consecutive shots and committed 10 turnovers during the spurt and did not score until 8:51 had elapsed.

Stuart Epperson scored 13 points and Terry Minnoy added 12 for Master’s (12-6, 4-1).

In other men’s games:

Moorpark 86, Cuesta 62--Damian Wilson scored 28 points and Sam Crawford added 15 points and 11 assists for Moorpark (21-3) in a Western State Conference game at Cuesta.

Occidental 79, LaVerne 78--Phil Engebretsen scored 15 points and teammate Hung Duong had 14 points and six assists as Occidental (11-7, 3-1) posted a come-from-behind Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. win at home.

Occidental trailed at the half, 41-37. For the Tigers, Brett Dennis added nine points and 11 rebounds.

WOMEN

Ventura 72, Oxnard 46--Nicole Ellis scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds and teammate Venessa Hackett scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Ventura (15-9, 2-0) in a WSC game.

Oxnard’s Nicole Force led all scorers with 24 points.

Santa Monica 81, Canyons 70--Host Santa Monica (14-5, 1-0) came back from a two-point halftime deficit to defeat Canyons (11-12, 0-1) in a WSC game.

Illana Mazingo led the Corsairs with 21 points. Danielle Hill added 19 and Kawasci Jackson had 16. Trailing, 32-30, at the half, Santa Monica used 22-for-35 shooting in the second half to pull away.

Kim Posey had 22 points for Canyons and DeeDee Hinson added 18.

Valley 69, Pierce 56--Katina Mines scored 16 points, including five three-point baskets in the first half, to help host Valley (21-3, 2-0) build a 43-21 halftime advantage in a WSC game.

Moorpark 59, Cuesta 54--Lisa Huffaker and Amy Chandler each hit two free throws in the final minute to secure the WSC victory at Cuesta. Sophomore forward Kerrie Marshall scored 17 points and Chandler and center Donna Houk each had 14.

Biola 93, Cal Lutheran 55--Thirteen players scored for Biola in a NAIA District 3 game at Cal Lutheran. Cal Lutheran (3-9) was paced by Dani Elton and Leslie Stevens, who each had nine points.
