Faced with growing incidents of vandalism in Oxnard, the City Council will consider Tuesday whether to spend $24,791 to start a graffiti removal and prevention program.

Under the six-month program, an employee would coordinate graffiti removal on public and private buildings.

In addition, the city would launch an anti-graffiti community awareness program, according to a city report.

The program would also provide a $250 reward for information leading to the arrest of a graffiti vandal. The city would spend a total of $5,000 for the rewards, the report said.

The graffiti-removal coordinator would work with neighbors and community groups to remove graffiti and would try to arrange for juveniles and adults on prison work-release programs to remove graffiti on weekends, according to the report.

The money for the rewards would come from the city’s general fund budget, but the remainder would come from federal grants, the report said.
