In Empire League girls’ soccer:

Los Alamitos 2, Esperanza 1--Esperanza’s three-year hold on the Empire League title began to slip as the Aztecs (14-2-2, 4-1-2 in league) lost their first league game in 3 1/2 seasons.

Los Alamitos’ (14-3-2, 4-0-1) victory gives it the inside track for the league championship because the schools tied, 1-1, in their first meeting at Los Alamitos.

“It’s an incredible feeling to finally beat them,” Los Alamitos Coach Leonard Lopez said. “We’ve been nipping at Esperanza’s heels for three years, finishing second behind them each time.”

With four minutes remaining, Los Alamitos’ Jenny Reyes scored the game winner from 10 yards by deflecting Laura Brun’s crossing pass into the lower right corner of the net.

Erin Ryan’s goal gave Los Alamitos a 1-0 lead five minutes into the second half. But Esperanza tied the score 12 minutes later on Heather Koch’s shot from in front of the Los Alamitos net.
