NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Ribet Academy Makes Its Mark by Exceeding 100 Points in Twin Wins

Ribet Academy is in La Canada, but the way the Fighting Frogs’ boys’ basketball team has been scoring points lately, the campus should be moved to Century City.

Ribet, the defending Southern Section Small Schools champion, scored more than 100 points twice last week in Heritage League victories.

The Fighting Frogs set a school record for points in a 125-29 victory over Pacific Christian on Thursday, then beat Antelope Valley Christian, 125-51, on Saturday.

The victories improved Ribet’s record to 15-2 overall, 6-0 in the Heritage League.

Ribet’s only losses have been to Bethune (S.C.), ranked No. 1 in the nation among Division V schools by USA Today, and Rosemead, which is ranked among the top 10 in the Southern Section 4-AA Division.

“We haven’t played as well as I would have liked,” Ribet Coach Michael Miller said. “We’ve scored some points mainly through our defense.

“It’s unfortunate that there hasn’t been more competition in our league.”

Ribet, led by returning All-Southern Section players Jrmirol Duncan and Jaiquin Moore, had been bolstered by the play of senior forward Chris Maxwell and sophomore center Andre English.

English was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds a game before he suffered torn ligaments in his right thumb.

Miller said the injury will keep English out of action until the playoffs.

Three for the road: Three more Glendale College football players have made commitments to four-year schools, Vaquero Coach John Cicuto said Tuesday.

Defensive back Ronnie Morgan will attend Weber State and running back Max Garcia and strong safety Danny Esparza will transfer to San Francisco State.

Cicuto also said that former Canyon High quarterback Rod Baltau has enrolled at Glendale after transferring from Texas El Paso.

Baltau will have one year of eligibility at Glendale, but Cicuto said the search for a replacement for Marco Arcipreste, who completed his eligibility, will continue.

“Baltau is a pretty good player to work with during the spring and he’ll be a strong candidate for the job,” Cicuto said. “But right now, next year looks like it could be a great opportunity for a quarterback because we don’t have anyone coming back.”

Good effort: Hoover High made a solid showing last weekend in the Sunkist Invitational at the Sports Arena.

Margarito and Angel Casillas, Sam Eskandari and Kelvin Munemitsu helped the Tornadoes finished fourth in the first heat of the boys’ two-mile relay in 8 minutes 35.7 seconds. The time placed Hoover in a tie for fifth overall. Palos Verdes won in 8:27.2. Madera was second (8:27.3) and Saddleback third (8:35.5).

Still kicking: The Crescenta Valley girls’ soccer team continues its roll toward an unbeaten season.

The Falcons, in their inaugural season, entered the week 14-0 after defeating Immaculate Heart, 5-0, Friday.

Jennifer Beal and Nancy Allen each scored two goals for the Falcons, who are playing this season as an independent.

Pacific League updates: As Pacific League basketball teams neared the midpoint in their schedules this week, the Glendale High girls’ team was undefeated and atop the standings while the Glendale boys were in third place.

The Glendale girls improved to 12-5 overall and 4-0 in league play with a 58-46 win over Pasadena last Friday. Jenny Dalton led the Dynamiters with 34 points.

Pasadena and Muir entered the week tied for second with 3-1 records. Crescenta Valley was 1-3 and Arcadia and Hoover were 0-3.

Muir and Pasadena were tied for first in boys’ competition with 4-0 records. Glendale (11-7, 2-2 in league play) lost to Pasadena, 66-59, last Friday.

Crescenta Valley and Hoover were 1-3 and Arcadia was 0-4.
