GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : With Iwamasa Out, Crooks Sparks Edison Past Santa Ana

Senior forward Talia Crooks had 32 points and 13 rebounds for Edison High School in a 63-38 Sunset League victory over Santa Ana Tuesday.

Erika Miller added 15 points and seven steals for the visiting Chargers (14-8, 4-5). Susan Mendez scored 10 for Santa Ana (1-8 in league).

Edison was playing without point guard Melanie Iwamasa, its second-leading scorer who severly sprained her ankle Jan. 15 against Marina.

In other Sunset League games:

Ocean View 56, Westminster 37--Nikki Vivion had 12 points for host Ocean View (14-9, 5-4), which led, 31-18, at the half. Guard Kristen McCluskey had six points and 11 rebounds for Ocean View.

Fountain Valley 56, Huntington Beach 49--Jennifer Johnson had a game-high 15 points in a losing cause for Huntington Beach (5-3 in league). Fountain Valley (6-2 in league) led, 32-22, at halftime.

In the Angelus League:

Bishop Amat 44, Santa Margarita 40--Karen Moran and Lesley Nolan each scored 11 points for host Santa Margarita (2-13, 1-4). Santa Margarita led, 34-31, at the end of the third quarter, but scored only two points in the final 4 1/2 minutes.

Rosary 45, St Joseph 39--Carolyn Chey had 15 points and Wendy Herb had 10 points and nine rebounds for visiting Rosary (9-7, 3-3). Bev Stiglebauer had 23 points for St. Joseph (4-2 in league).

In the Century League:

Canyon 43, Foothill 29--Erin Waggoner had 18 points for visiting Canyon. Melissa Weilandt had 11 points for Foothill (3-15, 3-4).

Orange 56, Villa Park 45--Jenny Hall had 31 points and 16 rebounds for host Orange (3-14, 2-5). Betsy Trollinger had 21 points for Villa Park (5-16, 2-5).

El Modena 55, Santa Ana Valley 43--El Modena took a 17-9 led in the first quarter and was never challenged. Melizza Benitez had 19 points and 18 rebounds for El Modena (12-4, 6-1).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 41, Troy 34--Tiana Roberson had 10 points for host Fullerton (10-8, 6-1), which led, 20-18, at the half. The last time the teams played Fullerton won, 69-19. Brandee Richardson had 19 points for Troy (0-7 in league).

La Habra 54, Buena Park 28--Zrinka Kristich had 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists for host La Habra. Ana Kristich had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Leslie Ferguson had 12 points and 13 rebounds for La Habra (17-4, 7-0). Melissa Masinsin led Buena Park (7-10, 3-4) with eight points. Leading, 14-11, after one quarter, La Habra outscored Buena Park, 17-6, in the second quarter and steadily pulled away.

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 50, Capistrano Valley Christian 42--Monique Grace had 17 points for host Whittier Christian (6-3 in league). Elainie Kollais had 13 points and seven assists for Capistrano Valley Christian (13-5, 5-4).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 53, Laguna Beach 27--Olivia DiCamilli had 21 points for visiting Costa Mesa (6-1 in league). Nikki Klempen had nine points and Laurie Rush had eight for Laguna Beach (3-13, 1-6).

Estancia 70, Century 22--Host Estancia romped to its first 20-victory season in 10 years with the victory. Melody Earle scored 21 points, Patrice Lumpkin had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Monique Sweet added 14 points for Estancia (20-1, 7-0). Laura Zepeda had 12 points for Century (0-7 in league).

Trabuco Hills 57, Laguna Hills 38--Leila Ryan had 22 points, Shelley Calhoun had 18 and Kim Falkenhagen had 12 rebounds and six blocked shots for visiting Trabuco Hills (10-12, 4-3).

In the Sea View League:

University 50, Newport Harbor 42--Christie Loud had 23 points and 14 rebounds for University (10-10, 3-4). Teammate Erica Field scored 10 points off the bench and Nicole Gallardo had 11 assists. Michaela Ross had 14 points for Newport Beach (9-10, 2-4).

Woodbridge 83, Corona del Mar 37--Deanna Harry scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds for visiting Woodbridge (17-4, 5-1), which outscored Corona del Mar, 22-5, in the first quarter. Nicole Schwartz added 14 points and six steals, and Nicole Quinn had 13 points. Heather Flaherty had 16 points for Corona del Mar.

Tustin 64, Saddleback 39--Christine Garner had 24 points and 15 rebounds for Tustin (20-3, 7-0). Point guard Wanda Sequeira added 15 points, nine assists and seven steals. Leading, 34-19, at halftime, Tustin started the third quarter with a 15-0 run to put the game away. Garner, a junior center, scored 13 in the third quarter.
