The Moorpark College wrestling team, the 1990 state champion, has received a welcome addition with the transfer of Greg Jackson from Michigan State.

As a freshman last season, Jackson was knocked out of the Big Ten Conference semifinals by an injury. He was ranked 16th nationally at 150 pounds before this season but was sidelined by academic difficulties.

Jackson placed third in the state at 145 pounds as a senior at Santa Monica High.

Robin Thomas, who won more games last season than any freshman pitcher in Moorpark College history, has not returned to school, softball Coach Will Thurston said.

Thomas finished 28-8 for a team that was 30-11 and she was chosen most valuable player.

However, Thurston has two freshman right-handers, Kathy Morales of St. Bonaventure and Sheri Sisco of La Reina, whom he believes can help pick up the slack.

Dani Elton, a Cal Lutheran forward, was selected the NAIA District 3 women’s basketball player of the week Monday.

Elton twice broke her career high for point total last week, scoring 25 against Occidental on Tuesday and 29 against Azusa Pacific on Thursday. Elton, a 5-foot-7 senior from Simi Valley High, broke a school record for free throws and attempts against Azusa Pacific, making 21 of 23.

Nick Sanderson of College of the Canyons was selected the Western State Conference basketball player of the week. In two games, Sanderson, a 6-3 sophomore from Bell-Jeff High, had 48 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Moorpark’s Amy Chandler was chosen WSC women’s basketball player of the week. Chandler, a 5-6 sophomore guard from Thousand Oaks High, had 45 points, 15 rebounds and 17 assists.
